Late DU power-play goal sinks Terriers

In a tightly-contested game, Denver broke a 1-1 tie midway through the third period on a power-play goal--Henrik Borgstrom’s second score of the contest--and went on to defeat BU at Magness Arena. The Pioneers added an empty-net goal for the final 3-1 margin.

The first period was scoreless despite the Terriers’ nine to three shot advantage and limiting Denver to one even-strength shot. But less than two minutes into the middle period, Borgstrom scored on the rush with a sharp angle shot that fooled freshman netminder Jake Oettinger . DU held a 12-7 shot advantage in the period, which ended with a late Pioneer penalty.

With the man-advantage continuing into the third period, BU knotted score on freshman Kieffer Bellows’ first collegiate goal. The wing from Edina, Minn., wristed a shot past Tanner Jaillet from the right circle, assisted by sophomore Charlie McAvoy and freshman Patrick Harper. The game's pivotal sequence came when BU had another power play at the 5:34 mark but failed to put a shot on goal. A minute after it expired, Denver went on the power play and with three seconds left in the man-advantage, Borgstrom broke in and scored on the backhand to regain the lead.

Coach David Quinn pulled Oettinger, who had 20 saves for the game, with just under two minutes left in the period, but BU couldn’t produce the equalizer. Denver’s Tyson McLellan found the empty net for the final 3-1 score.

Women’s Team
Grad student Mary Parker’s five-point game—a hat trick and two assists—powered the Terriers to a 7-2 win over Penn State at Pergula Ice Arena. Senior Maddie Elia contributed a goal and two helpers as BU snapped a two-game winless streak.

Parker’s first two goals, sandwiched between a Nittany Lions score, and sophomore Sammy Davis’ power play tally gave BU a 3-1 lead after one period. Penn State cut the margin to one early in the second, but Parker completed her hat trick midway through the period and sophomore Connor Galway notched her first collegiate goal on a blueline blast to give BU a 5-2 lead. Elia’s fourth goal of the season and Mary Grace Kelley’s first—both assisted by Parker—brought the final tally to 7-2.

Senior Victoria Hanson turned aside 21 PSU shots to gain the win.
