Third-period rally pushes BU past Michigan--UPDATED

Extended highlights added

For the second consecutive game, the #10 Terriers rallied in the third period from a 2-0 deficit to take a one-goal lead.  This time, BU held on for a 3-2 win over visiting #12 Michigan. The teams complete the two-game series today at 4 p.m. (watch & listen details).

Junior Doyle Somerby scored the game-winner from the left circle, ripping a shot past a screened Steve Racine.  Minutes earlier, with the score knotted at 2-2, he broke up a breakaway by Tyler Motte, only to be called for a slash with Motte awarded a penalty shot—which Terrier netminder Connor LaCouvee successfully defended.

The visitors, showing more jump than BU, had dominated the first period, scoring on a jammed in shot from the post by Alex Kile following a turnover and then on a power play blast by Cooper Marody.  While the shots in the scoreless second period were even at nine apiece, the territorial advantage remained with the Wolverines.

But the third was a different story, with BU quickly taking charge. The Terriers’ pressure finally paid off midway through the period during a power play, with Danny O’Regan ripping a shot from 30 feet past Racine off a feed from Matt Grzelcyk. Twelve seconds later, after Bobo Carpenter freed up a puck behind the Wolverine’s net, Robbie Baillergeon pulled the puck into the crease and banked it off a defender’s skate into the net to tie the score. That set the stage for Somerby’s heroics.

Coach David Quinn remarked:

“It’s not an easy thing to do when you don’t play well for two periods, and be able to pull it together, and give yourself a chance in the third. And that’s what I thought we did.

"I thought we came out with a lot more pace to start the third period. Lo and behold, we get one. The building gets excited and our bench gets excited, and we come back and get another one."
Regarding the penalty shot, Quinn added:
"I didn't think it was a penalty, let alone a penalty shot. I was very surprised. But Connor, again, makes an unbelievable save to give us a chance."
Sophomore LaCouvee produced another strong outing. Besides stopping the penalty shot, he turned aside a Michigan breakaway and a point-blank power play shot in the game’s final minutes, en route to a 26-save effort.

Freshman Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson had another dominant game in the faceoff circle winning 23 out of 31 draws, after winning  22 of 28 against Providence.
