LaCouvee backbones Terriers to road win--UPDATED

#10/11 Terriers rode a top-notch performance by sophomore goalie Connor LaCouvee to a 4-1 win against Northeastern at Matthews Arena. The netminder from Qualicom Beach, British Columbia stopped 33 of 34 shots, holding the Huskies at bay until 19:04 of the third period, when a defensive breakdown led to a shorthanded goal that broke the shutout.

LaCouvee barely saw the puck in the first period as BU outshot its hosts, 18-2, while taking a 1-0 lead on Captain Matt Grzelcyk’s power play goal set up by Danny O’Regan and Brandon Fortunato. NU’s Ryan Ruck made 17 saves to keep his team in the game.

About eight minutes into the second period, momentum changed when a series of turnovers helped the Huskies keep the Terriers bottled up for several minutes. But it was BU that found the net as junior Doyle Somerby (photo) carried the puck up the right side and wristed home a shot that glanced off the goalie’s pad.

In the final period, the Terriers killed a penalty; but Northeastern carried the attack for much of the period. For the second consecutive night, LaCouvee turned aside 19 third-period shots to earn a win. With Ruck pulled for an extra skater, Ahti Aksanen hit the empty net while Northeastern drew a penalty. After Adam Gaudette scored a shorthander, O’Regan fired home another empty-netter off a Charlie McAvoy feed to close the scoring.

Oksanen’s goal was his fourth in three games and the 40th of his BU career.

Beginning in Friday's game after the fourth NU goal, LaCouvee's shutout streak lasted 83:09.

Terrier blueliners produced five goals in the two games: Grzelcyk scored in both games. Fortunato and Brandon Hickey lit the lamp on Friday, as did Somerby on Saturday.
