Hockey East Awards Banquet

Terriers swept the top awards and placed five on the conference all-star teams at last night’s Hockey East awards banquet (photo gallery). Freshman Jack Eichel was named both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, joining Maine’s Paul Kariya (1993) and BC’s Brian Leetch (1987) as the only Hockey East players to do so as freshmen. Second-year head coach David Quinn won conference Coach of the Year honors.

Eichel and junior captain Matt Grzelcyk earned spots as First Team All-Stars, while senior Evan Rodrigues, and juniors Matt O’Connor and Danny O’Regan were named Second Team All-Stars. Eichel is the first Terrier named P-O-Y since John Curry in 2007 and the first named R-O-Y since Charlie Coyle in 2011.

► Episode 23 of Inside BU Hockey features Bernie Corbett’s interviews with Coach David Quinn, freshman wing J.J. Piccinich and former Terrier All-American, U.S. Olympian and two-time Stanley Cup winner Shawn McEachern.  Piccinich, a New Jersey native, played two seasons for USHL Youngstown before arriving at BU. McEachern (photo) starred for two Terrier squads that reached the NCAA Final Four (1990 and 1991) and scored the overtime winner (video) to defeat Maine in the 1991 Hockey East championship game. His 82 points (34G, 48A) in 1990-91 is second most by any Terrier. Following a 13-year NHL career, MacEachern went into coaching and now is head man behind the bench for The Rivers School.

Looking ahead

2018 recruit Logan Cockerill has been added to the roster for NTDP evaluation camp, which begins today in Ann Arbor. 2017 recruit David Farrance also is on the roster and former BU All-American and NHLer Freddy Meyer is on the camp coaching staff.

Women's Team

Senior captain Marie-Philip Poulin was named a first-team ACHA All-American, becoming the first Terrier to earn that distinction. The two-time Olympic gold medalist played for three of BU's four consecutive Hockey East tournament championship teams and finished her career with 81 goals and 181 points. With 54 points this season, she is a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award.
