Wednesday Linkorama--UPDATED





This weekend, the Terriers will be playing their first-ever game at Hartford’s XCEL Center, taking on the UConn Huskies this Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Friends of BU Hockey and the BU Alumni Association have invited fans to attend a pre-game gathering from 1:00-3:00pm, at the City Steam Brewery (just a short walk to the XL Center). Terrier TV: Both Friday night’s home game against Maine and Saturday’s matinee in Hartford will be available to Terrier TV subscribers.

►Next season is likely to see three BU games in the Nutmeg state. In addition to a regular-season game against Connecticut, we’re hearing that the Terriers will play ECAC powers Yale and Quinnipiac in a weekend set.

►Two columns look at the reasons for BU’s early success. One is USCHO’s TMQ column; in the other one, from Yahoo! Sports, Ryan Lambert opines that BU needs more production on the power play and from other forwards besides the high-scoring OREO line.

Arizona State has announced plans to elevate its hockey program from ACHA (club-hockey--where it is defending national champion) to Division 1 beginning next season. The Sun Devils will become the 60th D-1 program.

Reports are making the rounds that Terry Pergula, who bankrolled Penn State’s move into Division 1 and recently purchased the Buffalo Bills, is considering supporting a move to Division 1 by the University at Buffalo. Former Terrier Eddie Wright (photo) was the longtime coach of UB’s Division 2 program and a 40-year faculty member. Wright and fellow Chatham, Ont., native Herb Wakabayashi, a two-time All-American, along with Montreal’s Serge Boily comprised BU’s high scoring Pinball Line in the late 1960's. Wright was the first black head coach of a university team.

Looking ahead 
Prep hockey season is about to begin in New England and New York. Two future Terriers, Patrick Harper and Johnny McDermott—both 2016 recruits—will be playing for leading prep programs this season.

Harper, who led the Massachusetts Midget Selects Tier-1 U-18 division in scoring (as a 16-year-old) with 30 points in 14 games, will skate for perennial prep power Avon Old Farms.  Describing the 5-8, left-shot center, New England Prep Hockey News wrote:

Harper is small and slim but his high-end skill set makes up for his lack of strength and size. And by "high-end" we mean as high-end as any player we have seen in prep school hockey as of late. He brings people to their feet with highlight reel goals and passes all game long. [Edit: ..which he did tonight]

At the other end of the physical spectrum, McDermott (photo) is a 6-2 power forward, beginning his junior year at The Westminster School. USHR reported: “A good playmaker to go along with his skating, he is a power forward with finesse and has a lot of upside.”  McDermott, who previously had been an Eastern Junior Elite Prospects League All-Star forward with the Connecticut Oilers U16s, committed to BU in February 2014.  

HockeyProspect.com scout Russ Bitely’s projection of the top 10 American-born players for the next draft includes 2015 recruit Jordan Greenway along with current BU freshman Jack Eichel.

Looking back
Kevin Shattenkirk was back in Boston with the St. Louis Blues to take on the Bruins in what was the former BU captain, All-American and U.S. Olympian’s 300th NHL game. The New Rochelle, N.Y. native has scored six points in the last five games and has a 1-15-16 scoring line in 18 games this season. Bruins spoiled the milestone, winning 2-0.

Former BU All-American and Hobey Baker Award finalist Colin Wilson scored a goal and added an assist in Nashville’s 9-2 blowout of Toronto.

Former Hockey East All-Star defenseman Adam Clendening (photo) has been recalled from AHL Rockford to Chicago. Clendening, who was a first-team AHL All-Star in 2013-14, was briefly called up last season, but did not see any action. The right-shot blueliner from Wheatfield, N.Y. scored 59 points in two seasons at BU, following two years in the US NTDP. Rockford coach Jim Dent told ESPN:

 “He’s done well. I think it’s a good challenge right now for him. Get up there and see how you do. He’s been waiting for it. He’s wanted it. He’s deserved it over the course of the last 2 ½ years. Let’s see what he can go up there and do."


Former Terrier Corey Trivino was named ECHL Player of the Week after scoring four goals and two assists (with a +6) to lead the Florida Everblades to three wins in three days. A former Islanders draft choice, he has 103 points in 109 career ECHL games.  Late yesterday, Trivino, a member of BU's 2009 national championship team, was loaned to the AHL Portland Pirates.


Women’s Team
Freshman forward Victoria Bach (photo), who has a four-game goal scoring streak and found net in all three BU games last week, has been named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week. Senior captain Marie-Philip Poulin was named to the Weekly Top Performers list after scoring twice in BU’s 4-2 win over Connecticut. One of the goals was her eighth shorthanded goal as a Terrier, establishing a new program record.

BU fell one spot, from sixth to seventh, in both the USCHO poll and the USA TODAY/USA Hockey Magazine poll.
