Terriers top Friars, extend to 4-0 record

In their most complete effort of the season, BU dominated Providence in all aspects and came away with a 4-1 win. The shot differential, 41-18, was truly indicative of the performance. The victory gave the Terriers their first 4-0 start in 13 seasons (2001-02).

However, the Friars drew first blood when Steven McParland fired from the top of the right circle and beat Matt O’Connor at the 7:37 mark of the first period. BU gained the equalizer four minutes later when freshman Johnathan MacLeod wristed home a 40-footer for his first collegiate goal, assisted by Cason Hohmann and Evan Rodrigues.

Terriers dominated territorially and in grade A scoring chances in the middle period. Ahti Oksanen tapped in the rebound of a Jack Eichel shot for a power play goal with Rodrigues tallying his second assist. The senior wing then picked up a goal of his own going to the net to control the rebound of a Robbie Baillargeon blast and then flicking the puck past Jon Gillies high to the glove side.

Early in the third period with Providence having a man advantage, penalty killer Danny O’Regan chased down a puck in the Friars’ zone and found a trailing Eichel, who skated in and beat Gillies for his fourth goal of the season and first short-hander. BU held its hosts to three shots in the final period.

Three stars: 1. Evan Rodrigues 2. Jack Eichel 3. Cason Hohmann.

Three areas that Coach David Quinn stressed in the past week’s practices— power plays, penalty killing and face-offs—all showed marked improvement. Oksanen’s second-period goal gave BU its first power play score on its only opportunity of the game.  The Friars had 7:21 of power play time, including 39 seconds of a two-man advantage; BU limited them to two shots, while converting a short-hander.  After two games with less than 40% wins on draws, the Terriers were nearly even, controlling 26 of 53 face-offs.

In the second half of the home-and-home, BU hosts the Friars tonight with puck drop at 7 p.m. GameTracker,  Video Webcast, Radio Webcast
