Oksanen, Freshmen lead Terriers to Victory (UPDATED)

The BU Terriers used their exhibition match against St. Thomas (N.B.) to find the scoring touch that was lacking for much of last season, as they defeated the Tommies 12-1. Ahti Oksanen scored four goals, freshman sensation Jack Eichel assisted on all of them as well as on a goal by John MacLeod, and in all, the freshmen contributed 4 goals and 14 assists as the Terriers dominated the Tommies throughout the game. Freshmen defensemen Brandon Hickey and Brandon Fortunato each tallied three assists on the night.

Danny O'Regan, Doyle Somerby, and Matt Lane were all scratches, presumably to allow the coaching staff to get a good look at the freshmen and the other players that will be battling for spots. Matt O'Connor started in net and was replaced halfway through the second period by Anthony Moccia. Freshman Connor Lacouvee played in net for the third period, yielding the Tommies only goal on a deflection.

Oksanen, a 6'3" junior from Kirkkonummi, Finland, earned first star honors with Eichel taking the second star. Defenseman  Fortunato's performance--three assists, three blocks and +6--brought him the third star.K

Mike Moran had to leave the game in the third period after being on the receiving end of a hard hit that appeared to catch him in the head.

Looking ahead
2015 recruit Maxim Letunov scored the game-winning goal and earned first-star honors for Youngstown in the Phantoms' 3-1 win against Bloomington.The 6'3" center from Moscow has two goals and an assist in three USHL games.

2015 recruit Bobo Carpenter (photo) assisted on a goal for Sioux City in its 2-0 win against Sioux Falls. The former Austin Prep All-Scholastic now has five points in three games and leads the Musketeers in scoring.


2015 recruit Jordan Greenway picked up an assist--his fifth point in six games--as the NTDP U18s blanked Miami (of Ohio) University, 3-0.

Women's Team

Terriers dropped a 5-2 decision to top-ranked Minnesota on Saturday in Minneapolis. Both BU goals were scored by freshman Rebecca Leslie (photo). Despite a strong first period, BU trailed 1-0 after the first period. Leslie knotted the score early in the second, cashing in a rebound off of Maddie Elia's shot. Three minutes later, the Gophers retook the lead and added two power play goals, all in the space of 3:11, to break the game open. In the third period Leslie scored again, with assists to Elia and Rebecca Russo, cutting the lead to two goals, but that was as close as BU got. The Gophers added one more in the final seconds.

Freshman goalie Erin O’Neil stopped 23 shots for BU. A Minnetonka, Minn., native, O’Neil had been named the state’s Let’s Play Hockey Senior Goalie of the Year and a 2014 USA Today All-American.
